CUSTOMER STORY: GoHealth

GoHealth Partners with Sterling for Growth and Scale

Geared for growth

GoHealth has been growing by leaps and bounds since it was founded in 2001. The Chicago-based company started out as a two-person startup and today employs over 1600 full-time employees.

“When you are in a high-growth company like we are, you have to partner with organizations that not only can help you grow, but can grow with you,” says Mark Monitello, GoHealth’s Chief Human Resources Officer. “That was one of the key reasons in the decision to go with Sterling. If you don’t have the partnerships and technology in place that will help you grow and scale, it will stunt your potential. And that’s not acceptable.”

I stay with Sterling because I’m getting compliance guidance, cutting-edge data, and consistently strong customer service from a partner who is in our vertical and understands what we do.
Scale and speed

Since GoHealth’s business is high-growth and somewhat seasonal, it needs to scale rapidly in hiring especially during open enrollment periods. “When I started working at GoHealth,” Mark explains, “we were using a smaller background check firm. They just couldn’t flex to our volume or meet our needs. They couldn’t scale when we hired five times as many people and needed five times as many background checks done quickly. Scalability and speed of response was a big part of the decision to move to Sterling.”

Rigorous process

The majority of people that Mark and his HR team hire must go through a training process to be licensed to sell insurance not just in their home states, but also potentially in up to 30 or 40 states. That process is rigorous, Mark explains.

“Not only do we need pre-employment checks done for onboarding,” he says, “but we’re also running them through OIG checks on a monthly basis. We also need to get them appointed with insurance carriers who do their own background checks on top of that.”

“The process takes time and costs a lot of money,” states Mark, “so the accuracy and detail of background check information provided to us is critical, because to go through the whole process to find out that we potentially can’t get someone appointed to a carrier can be a very costly problem. Sterling’s technology has allowed us to get more accurate background checks faster and easier, which is critical to us and our success.”

Sterling’s technology has allowed us to get more accurate background checks faster and easier, which is critical to us and our success.

But it’s not just Sterling’s technology that is important to GoHealth.

“Why do I stay with Sterling and not go elsewhere? It’s because of Sterling’s consultative approach. It’s because I’m getting compliance guidance, cutting-edge data, and consistently strong customer service from a partner who is in our vertical that understands what we do. This is a key point for us, and is the difference between working with just a background check company, versus partnering with a consultative services organization that happens to be in the background check space.”
